As long as people didn't know what caused disease it was always very difficult to fight it.
Louis Pasteur's biggest scientific leap was to show that disease which is passed from one person to another is caused by microbes. We call these transmissible diseases.
Pasteur showed that disease is spread by tiny living things, which can easily travel on air, food or by touch.
When we know this it is much easier to fight disease. Can you think how?
